A brief history of the Cathedral  

This is the third Church building on this site; the first was built by the Vikings in 1096. At this time the previously pagan Vikings had become Christian and had affiliated themselves to the Archbishop of Canterbury.  He appointed the first Bishop of Waterford (in fact one of the first in ), Malchus, around this time. The Cathedral was the site of the wedding of an English Knight, Strongbow and an Irish Princess, Aoife, in 1170. This political union was to change the course of Irish history forever.  

By 1210 the Normans had taken over Waterford and they built a new Medieval Cathedral, a model of which you can see in the Cathedral (fig 6). This expanded over the years to include side chapels dedicated to people such as James Rice who was a leading figure in Waterford at the time. (See fig 11)The base of one of the pillars of the Norman Cathedral is still remaining and has been opened up for viewing (fig 5)  

However by the 18^th Century, the progressive City Corporation of the time regarded this Norman Cathedral as being very old fashioned and recommended to the Bishop that a new one should be constructed. It is said that Bishop Chenevix was none too happy with the idea so a little ruse had to be used to ‘help’ him change his mind. Some potential builders had arranged for rubble to fall in the Bishops path as he walked through the Church, sufficiently close to give him a shock or two! After a couple of narrow escapes Chenevix decided that a new Cathedral was a must. In 1773 the Norman Gothic Cathedral came down, but so strongly was it built that Gunpowder had to be used in its demolition!  

The present Cathedral was begun in 1773 and was completed in 1779 at a total cost of £5,397.  

It was designed by a local architect, John Roberts, who was responsible for much of Georgian Waterford. He also designed the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Barronstrand St, giving Waterford the unique distinction of being the only city in Europe to have the Catholic and Protestant Cathedrals designed by the same man.  

Architecture  

Mark Girouard, a well known architectural historian, has described this as the finest 18^th Century ecclesiastical building in Europe.

It is built in the Neo Classical Georgian style. Roberts liked the lightness and elegance of the classical style, (reminiscent of ancient ) which was in contrast to the darker, moodier, gothic interiors of most churches at the time. The spectacular stucco plasterwork ceiling is very similar to that seen in many 18^th century palaces and stately homes of Europe .

The original Cathedral was slightly different to what you see today. A disastrous fire broke out in the Organ gallery in 1815; the magnificent Elliot organ and much of the woodwork of the Cathedral was destroyed. It was closed for three years for repair and restoration.

 Some further ‘improvements’ were deemed necessary in 1891 by Sir Thomas Drew, a leading architect of the time. The square pews and galleries were taken away and the ground floor windows were blocked up.  The Organ was taken down from its gallery, a new case was built and it was squeezed into the left-hand corner of the Cathedral. However, in 2003 the Organ was restored and a gallery was built to house the Organ in its original position.
